Biography
Ibrahim Issifu is an interdisciplinary Fisheries Economist and a Research Associate in the Fisheries Economics Research Unit at the University of British Columbia Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries. He obtained his PhD and Masters at Nagoya University, Japan, and BA Economics and MBA (Finance option) at the University of Ghana Business School.
His policy-oriented research focuses on the intersections between social, economic and ecological sustainability. Ibrahim has over 10 years' experience in field-based empirical research complemented by global scale evaluations using big datasets. His interdisciplinary research supports decision-making in the areas of management, social well-being, governance, equality and climate adaptation.
He was involved in modelling Distant Water Fishing (DWF) across Senegal, Ghana, Somalia, Madagascar and Mozambique in order to identify the scale and characteristics of the DWFs and its impact on food security, and sustainability of frontline coastal communities in Africa. Additionally, he conducted extensive data analysis leading to publication in Nature Communications entitled "Blue food demand across geographic and temporal scales."
Ibrahim has extensive publications and his latest journal paper in Frontiers in Political Sciences highlights measures to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion in the blue economy.
Current Projects
His research and collaborations are progressing well, remaining on track to meet all upcoming publication and project deadlines.
Accomplishments and Awards
- Ibrahim led a successful proposal in partnership with the African Development Bank under the Blue Economy Resilience and Prosperity (Be-Prosper) project.
- The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) is expected to receive USD 1 million to train students from eight IGAD member countries.
- Rashid Sumaila and Ibrahim recently represented UBC at the project's inception launch in Djibouti City on November 17–18, 2025.
Academic Service
Ibrahim continues to review for journals such as Ocean Sustainability and recently received a reviewer recognition certificate for a published paper.
